8-26-2008 Bride and Prejudice correction (move from comments to blog)

Bride and Prejudice is a Bollywood musical featuring several pop tune-inspired song and dance numbers with gorgeous women in brightly adorned saris and jewelry. While this is my only experience with Bollywood films, it seems that the dance and performance numbers are a genre characteristic of Bollywood. Romance and a proper marriage seemed to be an obsession as well. There was one point in the film where the family of Jaya, Lalita, Maya and Lakhi even spoke of not having the money to afford a proper dowry for all four of their daughters. I think the jibes at Darcy were meant to stand as critiques of Western imperialism and arrogance. The arranged marriage referred to as a global dating service was hilarious as it reminded me of all the online dating services proliferating throughout the Internet.
